Healthy Blood Sugar Levels
Healthy blood sugar levels vary depending on whether you have eaten recently or not. In general, a normal fasting blood sugar level (after not eating for at least 8 hours) is between 70 and 99 mg/dL (milligrams per deciliter) or 3.9 to 5.5 mmol/L (millimoles per liter) for adults. A blood sugar level of 100 to 125 mg/dL (5.6 to 6.9 mmol/L) may indicate prediabetes, while a level of 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L) or higher may indicate diabetes.
After eating, blood sugar levels typically rise and then gradually fall over the course of several hours. Generally, a blood sugar level of less than 140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L) two hours after eating is considered normal for most people. However, people with diabetes may have different target ranges depending on their individual health situation and treatment plan, so it is important to consult with a healthcare provider to determine an appropriate blood sugar target range.
